What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of body and mind exercise pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates.

It is a highly effective exercise method designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance without building bulk or stressing your joints. This holistic approach sets Pilates apart from many other forms of exercise. All movements come from the centre of your body - the area between your bottom ribs and the top of your pubic bone, including your abdominals and lower back. In Pilates, this area is referred to as your “powerhouse”. Each exercise is controlled by your “powerhouse” and the aim is to engage these muscles and strengthen them. Osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise today.

Pilates is suitable for people of all ages – just look at Joseph Pilates – and for the unfit as well as for top class athletes! Loose comfortable clothing is recommended  together with just bare feet. Sessions generally last between 30 and 90 minutes.

Joseph H. Pilates
(1880-1967)

Joseph Hubertus Pilates invented and promoted the Pilates method of physical fitness. Born in Mönchengladbach, Germany he was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. He dedicated his entire life to becoming physically stronger, believing that the "modern" life-style, bad posture and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health.

In 1912 he moved to England where he became an accomplished boxer, diver, fencer, gymnast, circus performer and self-defence trainer. During World War 1 he was interned by the British authorities, during which time he trained other inmates in fitness and exercise. Here the beginnings of ‘Pilates’ began to take shape.

In 1925, Pilates migrated to the USA where he and his wife Clara set up a studio in New York City teaching ‘Contrology’ to dance and gymnastic students.

Joseph Pilates died in 1967 at the age of 87.

“If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, then you are 'old'. If at 60 you are supple and strong, then you are 'young’.”
